Wednesday 14th May | Maras Salt Mine
Train from Aguas Calientes to Cusco 08:53/13:35
Return to Cusco by train+bus.
Also known as the Maras salt mines, these are salt mines whose exploitation dates back as far as the Tahuantinsuyu. Located on the hillside, the salt mine, shaped like terraces or terraces, is crossed by a stream that supplies the salt pools with salt water. The use of Maras Salt dates back thousands of years and is passed down through each family but is managed communally.
The name of the salt mine in Quechua is Kachi Raqay and it is made up of about five thousand pools of about 5 square meters each. The water filters into the pools and evaporates due to the action of the intense sun, causing the coarse salt crystals to sprout. After 1 month the salt reaches 10 cm in height and must be harvested.
Thursday 15th May | Vinicunca, the Peruvian rainbow mountain
Its altitude, at 5,100 meters above sea level, makes it unsuitable for everyone, due to the possibility of altitude sickness. The most common way to get there is by booking a tour from the nearby city of Cusco, although you can also do it on your own.
The main attraction of the place, apart from the path to get there, is its unique colors, which has given it the nickname of the rainbow mountain or the mountain of 7 colors, a good place to visit if you have some time near Cusco.
